Cockermouth Lightning U9 Match Reports

10/09/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 1 Cleator Moor Celtic 2

Lightning got their season started with a very tricky fixture against one of the title favourites Cleator Moor Celtic. Despite this Lightning started brightly and looked to pass the ball around at every opportunity. Kicking downhill however helped Celtic and they found the net with a great goal from the right hand touch line. Lightning continued to soak up the pressure with Caleb pulling off some great saves. A fantastic counter attack saw Lightning go level with great link up play between Aaron, Will and Pierce which ended with Pierce scorching in a great left foot finish. Soon after however Cockermouth found themselves behind again and despite lots of attacking pressure in the second half they just couldn’t find an equalizer.

17/09/11 – Cockermouth Thunder 1 Cockermouth Lightning 1

OH MY WORD! Never have two teams been more aptly named. The first Cockermouth derby of the season took place in absolutely torrential conditions. Not ideal for the two strong footballing sides. Thunder started the brighter and following a mix up in the Lightning defence Kyle slotted neatly home. Lightning bounced back well and for the last 10 minutes of the first half controlled the play but were unable to find the net. Encouraging half time team talks from respective managers Nick & Jonny saw both teams come out strongly. Early pressure saw the ball fall to Will in the penalty area who finished calmly for Lightning to level the score. The goal had a positive effect on Thunder who piled on the pressure. Oliver unleashed one of this trademark thunderbolts only for George to pull off what could be the save of the season. Thunder continued to attack, in this game of two halves, and were desperately unlucky in hitting the woodwork twice more. Spencer put in a tireless performance for Thunder and Jack H showed great composure and skill for Lightning. Well done everyone!

21/09/11- (CUP) Cockermouth Lightning 0 Bransty Rangers 6

Following a bye in the first round Lightning found themselves one game away from the semi-finals. A strong breeze helped a strong Bransty side who piled on the pressure and scored three first half goals in a one sided half. Lightning started the second half much more brightly and Will was unlucky to see an early strike hit the post. Pierce was as strong as ever in midfield and ran the length of the field only to see his shot go agonisingly wide. Lightning knew this wasn’t their day and Bransty scored three more in the second half to complete a comprehensive victory.

24/09/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 5 Whitehaven Amateurs Yellow 4

Part two of the Thunder/Lightning home double header proved to be just as exciting as part one. Lightning started slowly and found themselves a goal down. This woke up the players and they piled the pressure on the Yellows goal. Lightning had a number of chances but some great keeping denied an equalizer. The Yellows then attacked quickly and scored what looked to be a crucial goal to go into half time two goals to the good. More pressure from Lightning saw Louis Pr unmarked in the penalty area and he slammed home his first goal of the season. Will then equalised with a composed finish to be followed by a great individual goal by Pierce to put Lightning ahead. The Yellows were not going to be denied and squared things up before Will nudged Lightning ahead again. Will was then unlucky not to complete his hat-trick as he rattled the post. The Yellows weren’t finished though and they did well to pull out another equalizer. What followed was a piece of absolute brilliance from Player of the Match Pierce who beat the entire Yellows team before launching a left foot rocket into the bottom corner of the goal to seal an amazing victory.

01/10/11 – Frizington Whitestar 2 Cockermouth Lightning 1

After the highs of last week the lows of a disappointing result at Frizington. Cockermouth started brightly and created a lot of early pressure. It was all one way traffic when Pierce opened the scoring with a great long range effort. More good play saw Pierce have another effort tipped over the bar by the Frizington keeper. Lightning went into half time one nil ahead and should have pushed on for victory. Coach Jonny must take responsibility as the changes to the formation in the second half didn’t work and Frizington took full advantage of a tired looking Lightning side. Two Frizington goals followed and despite have much more of the ball Lightning were unable to make it count.

08/10/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 4 Whitehaven Amateurs Blues 7

By Mark’s Dad

Lightning Strikes Four times but fails to Shock Whitehaven

The sky looked like an upside down bowl of porridge with some light drizzle – perfect conditions for some lightning strikes? It was not to be - well not to start with.

The Blues dominated the first half immediately from the start with Keelan scoring for the visitors within the first minute. This was followed by another attack at Lightning’s goal coming from a throw-in and headed straight into Caleb’s hands. In the fifth minute Rhys attempted a counter attack but this was stopped by Whitehaven’s goalie. The Blues quickly retaliated with a shot at goal – this successfully parried by Caleb but the second shot managed to find an open goal and make it 2-0 to the visitors. In the eight minute another attempt at Lightning’s goal was made but it was defended. The defenders then became the attackers as they raced into Whitehaven’s half in what looked like Lightning’s only serious attack of the first half. This was stopped by Whitehaven and they in turn ran back. A Whitehaven corner was successfully converted to a goal in the twelfth minute by Joseph. Two further goals were scored by the Blues including one from a long free kick, seconds before half-time.

After from the lack of drizzle, the second half began looking like a repeat of the first with Whitehaven scoring from a deflection within the first minute. However recent history did not repeat itself: Lightning began to strike back with some attacking moves and prevented conceding further goals by cutting down Whitehaven with some close marking hard tackling and good goal keeping. Persistence by Lighting resulted in a goal by Pierce in the 32ndminute as he weaved round the Blue’s goalie. This was followed by Lighting strike number 2 scored by Pierce again approximately 2 minutes later. Will’s shot from the middle of the Whitehaven half was deflected by Daniel into the net. Much towing and throwing between the teams respective halves ensued until Pierce successfully put away a fourth goal for Cockermouth in the 38thminute to earn himself a hat-trick.

15/10/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 1 Frizington Whitestar 1

By Louis’ Dad

The game kicked off under a cloud free sunny sky, and early signs were Lightning had their shooting boots on, in the opening seconds Pierce was just wide with a great piece of skill, and Daniel also showed his mettle with some fine passes and tackles, which had Frizington's keeper scrambling around in the mud with a shot just inches off the line. William as usual had a great start, skating past defenders, but not quite making the back of the net.
Frizington took first blood just before half time, after unpicking Cockermouth’s defence and managed to squeeze one past George, who was rock solid in the nets. The goal seemed to lift Lightings determination with some great wide runs and strong pressure from Aaron, and Thomas G.
Louis made some powerful tackles and set up some good attacking moves.

The second half started much the same with some really gutsy defending and skill from Jack H.
More shots rained down on Frizington, from Pierce, Will and Thomas G and coach Jonny looked confident, with a superb pass from Aaron to Will, Will made his kick count with a splendid shot, in the back of the net. Frizington fought back with a well-disciplined team but couldn't break down Lightning's spirit, with Mark showing no fear in defence. The home crowd cheered as Will sent the ball clearly goal bound only to stop suddenly on the patch of mud in front of goal, cruelly denying him a second. In the closing minutes the game was stretched seeing some desperate defending putting Lightning on the back foot but managing not to concede..

22/10/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 5 Maryport Monsters B 1

By Thomas G’s Mum

Lightning started as they meant to go on in this match, with a confident shot at goal from Thomas in the first 30 seconds and another promising attempt from Will soon after. Louis opened up the scoring for Lightning with a bit of individual brilliance, making a run from the halfway line and feinting a pass before popping the ball calmly past the opposition’s keeper.  Commitment from Will earned a corner for Lightning, with the team making use of some well rehearsed training moves - Pierce’s strong corner was well placed and Thomas sprinted in from the left wing to score Lightning’s 2nd.  After more confident play, Daniel saw his chance and made the score 3-0.

Pressure was applied by the opposition, with George, Jack and Ethan managing to slow down Maryport Monsters’ attacking play long enough for support to arrive. Maryport kept their cool and built up play steadily, scoring an excellent goal from a Free Kick just outside the penalty area, despite Caleb’s expert management of the defensive wall.

In the second half, Lightning continued to strike from all over the pitch as confidence ran high, with all players linking up well in their positions and making strong individual breaks down both wings. Mark’s persistence paid off in the attacking end to set Pierce up for Lightning’s 4thgoal. Pierce finished off the scoring shortly after. 5-1.

Goals: Louis, Thomas, Daniel, Pierce (2)

29/10/11 – Silloth 5 Cockermouth Lightning 4

By Jack H’s Mum

It was an energetic start from both sides, with plenty of good football as both teams settled well into the game.  An early chance came for Lightning, when Will crossed the ball into the box to Daniel who shot fast and forced the Silloth goalie to make an excellent save.  This was followed by a long goal kick into the Cockermouth half where the Silloth players were waiting to pounce, but an excellent save from Caleb kept the goal out.

Both sides were very even throughout the first part of the game, with both sides failing to score from chances being made.  Silloth made a great run down the wing, which was brilliantly intercepted by Lightning‘s defence, who sent it back into the Silloth half.  Silloth made a long shot straight back into Lightning’s half but it was brilliantly defended by George.

The first goal came during good play from both sides, but Silloth managed to slip through Lightning’s defence and put it in the back of the net.  Lightning came back straight away and were unlucky not to score one straight back.  Lightning’s first goal came when they were enjoying most of the ball, which resulted in a Cockermouth corner, and scored by Thomas G.  Cockermouth then built on their good run and Dan took his chance when it came, putting Lightning into the lead.  Silloth got a good run up to the net and shot when they had the chance making the half time score 2-2.

Another lively start from both sides saw the Silloth strikers on the attack, but captain for the day Jack cleaned it up and sent it back down the wing. Silloth sneaked another goal in making it 3-2.  Cockermouth came straight back at them again and an excellent corner from Will forced another great save from the Silloth goalie.

A fast, long shot from Silloth came straight into the Cockermouth goal and was just missed by Caleb’s finger tips who despite a great effort couldn’t keep the ball out making it 4-2.  The 5thgoal was an unfortunate own goal from a Silloth corner.  Making it 5-2 to the home team.

Despite the score Lightning kept on fighting not letting their heads drop.  The last part of the game was very much all about Lighting showing off their skillful play and ball control and had the most play of the ball.

With 10 minutes to go Daniel had a great shot which just went high of the net.  Cockermouth came at the home team hard and a lovely run by Will - who dribbled it past the keeper made the score 5-3.

Lighting pulled out all the stops and kept fighting, with another great run from Will finding the net again!

Cockermouth never gave in and a fantastic late shot from Thomas G had everyone’s hearts in their mouths - including the Silloth coach - unfortunately it just went high of the net.  Had it gone in it would have been just reward for Lightning who played the better football throughout the second part of the game.

All in all another brilliant effort from Lightning, who against a very physical Silloth side did themselves and their manager proud.

Goals: Thomas G, Daniel, Will (2)

12/11/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 1 St Bees 4

By Caleb & Ethan’s Dad

With an unbeaten run of 2 years St Bees were likely to be formidable opponents for Lightning.

A lovely day. The teams looked evenly matched with attacks from both in the early minutes. George was excellent in defence and broke up the St Bees attacks and pushed forward. Rhys also powerful in defence and Caleb, as usual, was a rock in goal and his kicks allowed Cockermouth to counter attack. Pierce had some good runs into St Bees and Will was effective on the wing.  St Bees kept up the pressure and there were a couple of heartbeats missed by the Cockermouth support with the defence working hard. At times Lightning defence was a bit leaky but worked hard in the face of repeated St Bees corners. On counterattack Pierce had an excellent shot which was just wide. As we reached half time Mark made an excellent push forward and Will shot wide. 0-0 and this looked like a nail biting match.

St Bees opened up with an attack broken up by Daniel. More good work from George to set up an attack and Pierce crossed, Will got a touch before the ball was deflected into the St Bees net. Lightning 1 up.  St Bees were still threatening and a free kick went to the top right corner. 1:1. How would this end? Lightning heads stayed high and counterattacked but the game was becoming end to end. The St Bees pressure was increasing and Player of the Match Caleb was called on several occasions to keep the score level.  George was very effective in defence and attack. Louis tried to push forward on the left. A free kick led to a Pierce/Will double act but the ball went over the bar. Still good Lightning pressure but a break out by St Bees led to 2 players in space and Caleb had little chance. 2.1 St Bees. Thomas attacked again, but St Bees were lethal on the break out and in a 2 similar moves to the previous goals pushed 2 more into the net.  4:1 to St Bees. Lightning did not give up and there were some good crosses but with no one in the middle. However, the defence managed to break up more St Bees attacks, with Jack and Ethan intercepting some strong pushes forward.

19/11/11 – St Bees 0 Cockermouth Lightning 0

By Ben’s Dad

St Bees started strongly, pressing the Cockermouth defence hard in the first five minutes but the defence held out and our boys started to get more into the game. There were chances at both ends with each goalie making good saves. Strong tackling by the Cockermouth midfield kept St Bees at bay toward the end of the half and a header off the line by Aaron and a brave diving save from Caleb to take the ball away from the St Bees centre forward when a goal looked certain kept the score to 0 - 0 at half time.

After the half time huddles, both teams came out looking for the win. As in the first half, St Bees applied the pressure up front but a combination of wild shooting and great defence kept the ball out of the Cockermouth net. Cockermouth took the ball up the field several times and had a missile of a shot from Thomas well saved and a well-taken corner just knocked wide.

The last five minutes saw the Cockermouth goal under siege and the away supporters became slightly nervous. However, the defence kept its shape, denying St Bees the score and the game ended as a hard fought draw.

Well played Cockermouth and man of the match Thomas G.

26/11/11 – Cleator Moor Celtic 2 Cockermouth Lightning 1

By Daniel’s Dad

Match started well with two evenly matched sides for most of the first half. Lightning had two long range attempts from Pierce before Cleator took the lead just before the break with a well taken individual goal from a dribbling run from the defence.

Second half it was mostly one-way traffic with Cleator’s passing ability in evidence as they strewn chance after chance in front of the Lightning goal with Caleb pulling off some great saves and Aaron making some important interventions. Cleator made their possession pay with a well-taken free kick mid-way through the second half as Lightning looked tired having chased the ball for much of the half.

Lightning provided a glimmer of hope with a few minutes left on the clock with a well taken counter attacking move finished off expertly by Will, but it finished 2-1 to Cleator Moor Celtic in the end.

03/12/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 4 Bransty Rangers 6

As the season moved into December a chill wind blew strongly across Lightning’s home ground. Bransty arrived full of confidence with the memory of the 6:0 mauling they had inflicted on Lightning in the Cup early in September. However after two strong defensive displays in the last two weeks Lightning went into the game believing they could avenge that defeat.

Both teams started brightly with Bransty kicking with the wind in the first half. They soon picked up on poor positional play from Lightning to open the scoring. This quickly became two, then three with Lightning looking unusually subdued.

A piece of individual brilliance from Daniel to score gave Lightning hope. This was then followed by a cross shot from Will which caught out the Bransty keeper. Despite being behind Lightning found themselves on top moving towards half time. Disaster followed though with more disarray in the Lightning penalty area allowing Bransty to score and take a 4:2 lead into half time.

Bransty started the second half the quickest and stretched their lead to three goals with a simple chance following more poor play from Lightning. Daniel playing probably his best game for Lightning got one back with some great dribbling before finishing well.

Jack H was battling for every ball in defence and was as solid as ever. Despite all his efforts this didn’t stop Bransty scoring a sixth to open up the gap the three again.

Pierce put in another player of the match performance in midfield and his trademark runs resulted in a number of chances for Lightning. Will is always a threat and when his chance came he took the ball neatly round the keeper to score. Lightning pressed and pressed in the last five minutes but couldn’t break down a determined Bransty side.

Once again Bransty scored six past Lightning however at least this time Lightning got four back!

Goals: Daniel (2), Will (2)

Player of the Match: Pierce

Team: Caleb, Ethan, George, Jack H, Aaron, Pierce, Daniel, Thomas G, Louis, Will.

10/12/11 – Cockermouth Lightning 1 Workington A 2

After a week of wind and heavy rain both teams were delighted that the game could go ahead on a bright Saturday morning. Workington A started as strong favourites having lost only one league game so far, but the fact that it was Thunder who beat them gave Lightning hope of a similar result.

Workington started the quickest kicking down the slope. With Caleb taking a break Aaron took over the gloves and set his stall out early making some confident saves. This helped relieve the pressure and as the half progressed Lightning grew in confidence. Ben was called into action on a number of occasions and used his powerful throw to set up a number of attacks. Mark was involved in a lot of the good work as most of the opportunities were coming from the right side. It was however a break down the left flank that saw Lightning awarded a free kick. Will saw his chance and slotted the ball neatly home but unfortunately the whistle hadn’t been blown and the goal was ruled out.

It was then Workington’s turn to hit Lightning on the break. Aaron came out quickly but was unfortunate to catch the Workington attacker and a penalty was awarded. This was converted well but again before the referee had blown his whistle so a retake was ordered. The Workington striker was then devastated to see this effort fly back off the bar.

The second half started with the game wide open and all three results possible. Lightning started brightly with Jack H and Thomas G involved in the action. Lightning were now defending with confidence and were always looking to play the ball into midfield to set up attacks. More pressure from Pierce saw Lightning gain a corner that Will whipped in but unfortunately no one could get a touch to score.

What then followed was probably the turning point in the game. George who was having a great game at centre back went in for yet another tackle but this time came off worse and had to take a rest. Having just made some planned changes Lightning had to change the defence again which seemed to unsettle the team. Workington took advantage and scored two quick goals, one an excellent header from a corner and the other a tap in following some strong passing.

Fearing the worst the crowd rallied behind Lightning and this spurred them on. Daniel and Louis were back on following a break after half time and were committed to getting Lightning back into the game. The unfortunate Jack H then had to take a rest following a tangle with the referee. More pressure down the left from Thomas G and Pierce saw Lightning gain another free kick just outside the penalty area. Will stepped up and curled a beauty of a shot over the wall but also just over the bar.

Lightning pushed on and on in search of a goal and were rewarded when the ball rebounded to Pierce on the edge of the penalty area. He unleashed one of his trademark left foot rockets and Lightning were back in the game.

With only seconds left Will found himself in space and curled a teasing ball to the far post. Thomas G leapt above the Workington defence but just couldn’t quite make contact to claim the point that this strong Lightning performance deserved.

17/12/11 – Workington A 2 Cockermouth Lightning 2

Following last week’s excellent performance Lightning went into this return fixture with high hopes of a positive result. The question was with only 8 days until the Big Day could they deliver an early Christmas present for the travelling supporters.

Surprisingly after a week of rain, then snow, then frost the Workington ground was in very good condition. Workington opted to kick down the slight slope first; however it was Lightning that started the brightest. Some great play from Daniel and Thomas G saw Will in on goal but unfortunately his shot was just wide. Workington came back strongly as they looked to boss the midfield. Lightning were always a threat on the break though, and Will again had a clear shot on goal which skidded wide of the post.

Lightning’s defence was resolute with Ben, who took the captains armband looking assured in his right back role. George as ever was giving 100% to the cause. Jack H was playing some lovely link up play down the left flank and keeper Aaron was determined not to concede. Halfway through the first half Louis came on and straight from his first touch looked in great form.

Workington’s pitch is huge and the Lightning players realised that they needed to pass the ball around to get themselves into attacking positions. This started to pay dividends as Lightning forced a number of corners. Thomas G did some great homework during the week working out two excellent moves for corners. It was one of these moves that almost saw Lightning open the scoring but unfortunately Workington scrambled the ball clear.

Workington started to pile on the pressure but Lightning were matching them in every department. With the game heading towards half time Workington scored a brilliant individual goal to take a 1:0 lead into the break.

Lightning again started brightly from the kick off with Thomas G testing the Workington keeper from long range. Workington responded but George playing at the heart of defence was an absolute rock and didn’t miss a tackle all day. It was one of these tackles that set up Lightning’s equalizer. The ball fell to Daniel who passed well to Will who in turn found Pierce in space. With instructions to shoot at every opportunity Pierce took aim and fired a great shot towards the Workington goal. The shot took a slight deflection and left the keeper with no chance.

This spurred Workington back into action and they attacked well down the right. A lovely ball in gave Aaron no chance as the Workington striker chested the ball in on the line. Sensing victory Workington piled on the pressure but the Lightning defence was strong. Jack H put in another composed performance at left back.  Aaron in goal played another stormer and pulled off some superb saves including a great double save on the goal line.

Louis was now back in the action and having his best game of the season. Not only was he winning all his tackles but he was taking the ball out of defence and putting some great balls into midfield. Lightning were starting to edge their way back into the game and were testing the Workington defence. More strong play down the Lightning right saw the ball find Will in the penalty area. Through sheer determination and a couple of deflections Will managed to poke the ball home and make it 2:2.

This really was turning into a classic game with Workington again back on the attack only to be denied by Player of the Match Aaron. There was just time for one more twist when Will sent in a cross/shot from right touchline. The ball was heading straight for the far top corner but the Workington keeper pulled off an amazing save to keep the ball out. The final whistle came shortly after with a draw the best result for this excellent game.

Merry Christmas everyone!

07/01/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 1 Maryport Monsters A 6

It was back to business for Lightning following the Christmas break with a tough fixture against high flying Maryport Monsters A. Conditions at Cockermouth School were surprisingly good following a spell of wet weather and both sets of supporters were looking forward to a good game.

Lightning started the game brightly. It was good to see Rhys back in the team who had missed the last four games with an ankle injury. It was Rhys who was linking up well with Daniel and Thomas G in midfield to push Lightning forward. Jack H started up front and was looking to get forward at every opportunity. George composed as ever at centre back was well supported by Ethan and Louis on either side. Aaron took the gloves looking to add to his last two player of the match performances.

In the early part of the first half the majority of the pressure was coming from Maryport A as they attacked down their left flank. However Rhys and Ethan were teaming up well to stop any danger.

After 10 minutes Pierce and Will entered the action looking to put Maryport on the back foot. Moving towards half time the game was pretty even with no team dominating. Pressure down Lightning’s left however lead to a throw which saw the Maryport player put a cross into the box that turned into the perfect shot giving Aaron no chance as the ball looped over him into the far top corner.

More changes at half time saw Caleb in goal and Ben take over at right back. Lightning again started the half brightly and attacked well down the left with Jack H playing some great balls through to Thomas G and Daniel. This was turning into a very physical game with the majority of the free kicks going to Lightning.

It was Maryport A however that opened the scoring in the second half. 2-0 quickly turned into 3-0 as Maryport piled on the pressure. Lightning were determined to get a goal back and some great play from Jack H and Pierce gave Will a shot at goal. Unfortunately the strike flew back off the post and you sensed it wasn’t going to be Lightning’s day.

More good play from Daniel and Will saw Lightning gain a free kick just outside the Maryport penalty area. Pierce caught it beautifully only for it again to fly back out off the post. To rub salt into the wound Maryport went up the other end and scored a fourth then a fifth.

Playing only for pride Lightning attacked once more and this time Will found himself in space. He managed to nick the ball off the keeper and shoot. The shot again hit the woodwork but this time fell to Pierce who made no mistake.

Lightning’s defence was a little shell shocked and unfortunately conceded a sixth close to the end. The final action of the match saw Lightning with a corner. Will curled it into the penalty area and you guessed it hit the post again!

There was no doubting that on the day Maryport were the stronger side however with a bit more luck the result could have been a lot closer.

04/02/12 – Whitehaven Amateurs Blues 6 Cockermouth Lightning 2

After missing the last three weeks due to a combination of waterlogged and frozen pitches Lightning were happy that the fixture could go ahead on Whitehaven’s astroturf. The weather however was not kind with a cold wind and hail making the conditions very difficult.

Whitehaven started the brightest and piled the pressure on the Lightning defence. Aaron, playing at the heart of defence made some good early clearances and Caleb was looking solid in goal. However Whitehaven were the more determined and kicking with the wind they quickly raced into a two goal lead.

Good combination play down the right between George and Pierce saw Will through on goal but from a tight angle the ball hit the side netting. Whitehaven continued to push forward and Caleb was unlucky not to keep out a third.

With half time approaching Pierce found himself unmarked in the centre circle. Taking the ball forward he unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom right corner.  At half time Lightning were back in the game.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with all the early pressure coming from the Whitehaven side. Four goals quickly became five and Lightning were up against it. Pierce however was determined not to let it all be one way traffic and scored his second with another excellent long range strike.

As the half went on Lightning had the better of the chances. Mark was unlucky not to score when his shot was blocked and Pierce was convinced he had bagged a hatrick when the ball looked over the line but the goal wasn’t given. Whitehaven added a sixth before the end to round off a disappointing day for Lightning.

11/02/12 – Workington B 0 Cockermouth Lightning 12

Without a win since October Lightning were a team low on confidence going into this tricky fixture against a much improved Workington B side. Despite the poor weather during the week the Workington pitch was once again in excellent condition.

Straight from the kick off Lightning were into their stride and didn’t let the home side settle. Ethan and Louis were always looking to get involved from their full back roles and Aaron was putting in some great tackles in the centre of defence. Some lovely play involving Daniel, Thomas G and Will set up Pierce to open the scoring. Another great strike from Pierce quickly made it 2:0.

The move of the match made it 3:0 to Lightning. Pierce played a lovely ball to release Will on the right wing, he then beat a couple of Workington defenders and sent in a teasing ball to Thomas G who timed his run perfectly to hit the ball first time into the corner of the net.

Jack H and George came off the bench and were straight into the action bringing the ball out of defence and linking well with the midfield players. After more pressure Will added a fourth with a neat finish and then Pierce completed his hatrick before half time with another trademark left foot rocket.

Workington started the second half brightly and forced Caleb into a couple of good saves. Lightning however weathered the storm and with Jack H and George now in midfield they started to get back on top. Will got his second which was followed by Pierce’s fourth as the spirited Workington side started to tire. Will then completed his hatrick before going on to net a fourth.

As the match drew to a close Aaron popped up for his first goal of the season. Thomas G then showed his talent by scoring direct from a corner. With only seconds left Aaron notched his second to round off a great day for Lightning, however you have to say that the score was very tough on Workington who never let their heads go down.

18/02/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 6 Silloth 4

After an early morning deluge the Cockermouth School pitch required some hasty repairs. With the puddles filled in the pitch was a little sticky in places but was fine for kick off time. Silloth just edged a 9 goal thriller the last time these two teams met so the crowd was expecting a close game.

During the warm ups the heavens opened with a combination of rain and sleet but both teams didn’t let this affect them as they both started brightly. Kicking up the slope Lightning had the first chance when Daniel played a lovely through ball to find Will in space who in turn shot only for the Silloth keeper to pull off a great save. More Lightning pressure followed and this time it was Thomas G who was the provider for Pierce but again the keeper made a great save. At the other end Aaron was doing a similar job for Lightning pulling off a couple of confident stops.

The Silloth keeper really was on top of his game; however he had no chance from a beautiful left foot strike from Thomas G to open the scoring. Silloth are a determined side though and before Lightning could celebrate they were down the other end to level the score. This stirred Lightning into action and they really piled the pressure on. Corner after corner followed but they couldn’t find the net. Lightning were playing some lovely football building from the fullbacks with Daniel and Jack H carrying the ball out of defence and releasing the midfield players. Despite this it was route one that saw Lightning score a second. Aaron hammered a monster of a goal kick up field and Will was the first to react latching on to the long ball before confidently sliding it past the keeper. As half time approached however Silloth were not going to be out done and against the run of play scored an equalizer.

Two changes at half time brought Louis and Rhys into the action and they were both involved early as Lightning picked up where they left off. It was a lovely ball from Rhys that released Pierce who set up Will for Lightning’s third. At the other end George was doing an excellent job as centre back marshalling the defence and making some important clearances. It was a slip in the Silloth defence that presented Will with his hatrick as he latched on to a loose ball to round the keeper and slot home. More lovely play from Daniel and Will saw Pierce finish well and Lightning were now 5:2 ahead.

Silloth never give up and scored the goal of the game with a great strike from wide on the left from their player of the match which gave Aaron no chance. Lightning weren’t done though as Louis found Thomas G in space, who then passed to Pierce who shot to the far post were Will turned in the chance to make it 6:3. There was just time for Silloth to score again before the final whistle blew to bring down the curtain on an excellent all round team performance.

03/03/12 – Maryport A 4 Cockermouth Lightning 1

Heavy overnight rain meant a late switch of venues from the grass of Solway Park to the astroturf of Netherhall School. Thankfully the rain cleared just in time for kick off.

Things didn’t start well for Lightning with Maryport scoring inside the first minute with the first attack of the game. More pressure ensued and only a great save from George stopped Maryport stretching their lead. This however sparked Lightning into life. Captain Daniel showed great composure dribbling the ball out of defence to set up Lightning’s first attack. More pressure continued as Pierce, Will & Thomas G linked up well, playing some lovely passing football. Louis was putting in a good shift on the right wing and at half time there was only the early goal dividing the teams.

The second half saw changes in positions with Daniel taking over the gloves from George who slotted into centre back. Will moved to right midfield with Louis taking over the lone striker role. The half however didn’t start well for Lightning as Maryport doubled their lead. Lightning battled hard though with Jack H making some lovely runs down the left. It was a good clearance from Mark on the right however that released Will only for him to be fouled half way into the Maryport half. From the resulting free kick Pierce hit a great strike which gave the keeper no chance to put Lightning back in the game.

As the half wore on Lightning were putting everything they had into searching for an equalizer but just couldn’t find the net. With only five minutes to go Lightning finally ran out of steam and conceded two late breakaway goals.

The final score was harsh on a Lightning team whose effort could not be faulted.

10/03/12 – Maryport B 0 Cockermouth Lightning 2

In strange twist of fixture fate Lightning found themselves back in Maryport again but this time Maryport B were the opposition. With the weather improving this game was back on the grass and although a little sticky in places conditions were generally good.

Straight from the first minute Lightning were looking to attack with Daniel making a lively start taking the ball forward at every opportunity. Pierce and Rhys were linking up well in midfield. Rhys was demonstrating why he is one of the best passers in the team by playing a number of lovely balls through for lively Thomas G to run on to.

Lightning continued to attack throughout the first half forcing a number of corners; however the Maryport keeper was in form fine and saved everything that Lightning threw at him. At the other end Caleb was determined to keep a clean sheet. Louis and Ben stopped anything that came their way and helped keep Lightning on the front foot.

The half ended with the scores level.

Mark, Ethan & George replaced Louis, Ben and Rhys as the second half got underway. Lightning were again straight on the attack but in a mirror image of the first half the Maryport keeper was proving unbeatable. However Lightning were showing great maturity in not panicking as they continued to play their passing game.

With 10 minutes to go the deadlock was finally broken. Good work from Ethan and Daniel down the left flank released Pierce who put in a real teaser of a cross/shot to the far post. The ball flew over the keeper and into the top corner.

This signalled more pressure from Lightning and some lovely skill from Player of the Match Thomas G found Aaron in the box. With his back to goal Aaron turned the defender and slotted a great finish past the keeper.

Maryport battled hard but ultimately it was a deserved victory for Lightning.

17/03/12 - Whitehaven Amateurs Yellow 2 Cockermouth Lightning 6

The last time these two teams met Lightning just edged it in a nine goal thriller. Conditions could not have been better on the AstroTurf at Whitehaven; the sun was beaming down as the crowd anticipated another entertaining game.

Lightning were straight into their stride playing some lovely attacking football. Pierce, Daniel and Thomas G make a great trio in midfield and were all linking well to force an early corner which Lightning just failed to convert. More pressure from Lightning saw Whitehaven lose the ball in midfield, the ball fell to Will who hit a cracking shot from outside the box into the bottom corner of the net.

A second goal followed soon followed. Thomas G placed a teasing corner into the box which Daniel finished well. Lightning were well and truly on top and a third goal soon followed. From another Thomas G corner, Will had a shot that was blocked the ball came out to Pierce who fed the ball through to Will who made no mistake this time.

Lightning’s defence was looking solid with Louis, Jack H and George protecting keeper Caleb well. It was from a nice move involving Jack H, George and Daniel that lead to another Lightning corner. This time Will turned provider as his long corner passed over everyone to find Thomas G at the far edge of the area. Thomas hit the ball superbly first time on the half volley and the ball flew into the top corner.

Half time saw Ben and Ethan replace Thomas G and Daniel with Louis and Jack H pushing up into midfield. It was Whitehaven that started the half brightly and they soon pulled a goal back. Caleb was being put to the test more in this half and pulled off a couple of great saves. It wasn't too long though before Lightning regained their four goal advantage when Will broke down the right flank and put in a lovely cross for Pierce to slot home.

Whitehaven responded well though and their skilful number nine scored their second but from the restart Ethan played a great ball to Will who finished confidently to complete his hatrick.

Thomas G and Daniel replaced Pierce and Will. Louis was making some great surging runs down the right flank and you could see his confidence increase with every touch. On the left flank Ethan and Jack H were playing some lovely football. As the half drew to a close the Whitehaven keeper pulled off a couple of great stops to deny Lightning a seventh.

All in all a very pleasing performance in very pleasing weather!

24/03/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 2 Whitehaven Miners 2

After 3 consecutive away games Lightning found themselves back on home soil on an absolutely beautiful morning.

The sunny conditions suited Lightning as they started much the stronger side. Rhys and Aaron were linking up well down the right flank creating a lot of early pressure. George and Pierce were putting in strong tackles to win the ball back whenever Lightning lost possession. However it was from the left that Lightning scored the opening goal. Jack H fed Daniel who broke out of defence well to beat a couple of players before playing the ball down the wing to Will who picked it up in his stride to avoid the Miners defence and play in a lovely ball for Aaron to slot home with a composed first time finish. This was surely one of Lightning’s best team goals of the season.

Lightning continued to dominate the half and were unlucky on a number of occasions not to add to their lead. Miners however are a team that always battle and pressure on the Lightning defence saw a slip which allowed Miners to equalize going into half time.

Miners, buoyed by their equalizer, started the second half the better team creating a lot of pressure on the Lightning defence. Caleb was looking solid in goal, however he could do nothing to stop Miners second which was an excellent individual goal. Lightning now found themselves behind in a game which they had dominated most of. It says a lot for the spirit of this Lightning side that they didn’t let their heads go down but instead pushed forward at every opportunity searching for an equalizer.

Mark and Ethan played with real determination supporting the midfield at every opportunity. Lightning were pilling on the pressure now as Pierce went close. The Miners keeper was having a stormer though saving everything that came his way. From a throw Will beat two players in the box only to see his shot ricochet back off the post.

Time was running out as Will broke again but was fouled on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick Will curled a beauty around the Miners wall and into the top corner to earn Lightning a much deserved point.

A great team performance on the hottest day of the year so far!

31/03/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 4 Workington B 1

After another week of scorching weather the Cockermouth School pitch was as dry as a bone and very bouncy. Although the last game between these sides was one-sided Lightning did not under-estimate the opposition as they had clearly turned the corner in terms of results.

Louis took the captains armband and was straight into the action from the kick off beating a couple of players before putting a dangerous ball into the centre which was almost converted. Rhys and Jack H started the game confidently and were linking well with Aaron and Louis in midfield. It was obvious that the Workington players had learned from the last game as they didn’t let Lightning settle and were really up for the game.

Caleb, who has been in great form, launched an accurate kick downfield for Pierce who laid the ball off nicely to Will whose shot was well saved. The ball then came out to Will who returned the favour to Pierce who blasted the ball into the top corner.

From the restart Workington were straight on the attack but thankfully for Lightning George was there with another great tackle. George has been an absolute rock in defence all season saving Lightning on numerous occasions.

Pierce was in fine form making a number of surging runs into the Workington half therefore it was no surprise when he added his and Lightning’s second with another great finish.

As the teams turned around for half time the wind picked up and was blowing strongly into Lightning’s faces. With the score at only 2:0 Lighting could take nothing for granted. Workington started the half brightly however they couldn’t find a way past Ethan and Aaron who put in tackle after tackle.

It was Will who eased the pressure to make it 3:0 as he rounded the Workington keeper to slot home. A fourth soon followed for Lightning and it was Will again who hammered home a lovely finish to beat the keeper at the near post.

Workington really battled hard and despite a string of great saves from Caleb they finally got their reward as they scored to make the final score 4:1

07/04/12 – Whitehaven Miners 8 Cockermouth Lightning 6

The Easter holidays took their toll on the Lightning squad with only seven players available. However the players that were available were high on confidence after some good recent results. Miners had eleven players therefore the coaches agreed to play slightly longer half’s in order that all the Miners players could get a run out.

Lightning absolutely flew out of the blocks playing some of their best football of the season on a lovely surface. Will opened the scoring with a deflected shot and quickly made it 2:0 will a strong finish. Pierce and Thomas G both added great goals following more fluent play from the boys and Lightning were cruising at 4:0.

Miners however are a very strong side and were determined not to let Lightning have it all their own way. They got themselves back into the game and with two quick goals before Pierce added a brilliant fifth for Lightning with one of his trademark wonder strikes from the left flank.

On the stroke of half time Miners scored again to make the score at the break 5:3 to Lightning.

Miners started the second have strongly and applied a lot of pressure however Lightning always looked dangerous on the break. Mid-way through the second half Miners had pegged Lightning back to 5:5 before another brilliant counter attack saw man of the match Pierce complete a well-deserved hatrick.

Miners scored again to make the game 6:6 by which time the crowd were beside themselves!

Lightning were now tiring but Will somehow found the energy to beat three players and put in a teasing cross for Thomas G. For those of us that remember Euro 96 versus Germany this was the Gazza moment as Thomas G slid in but was a whisker away from the converting the ball. Thomas G, Pierce and Will showed their true class throughout the game showing what a complete trio they are.

At the other end Mark, George and Jack H were playing out of their skins throwing themselves into every challenge in the face of relentless Miners pressure. Aaron must get a special mention too as he made numerous brilliant saves as well as starting a number of attacks with his pinpoint accurate goals kicks.

Ultimately Lightning couldn’t hold on as Miners scored two late goals to seal the victory. This has to go down as the game of the season so far. Both teams played some brilliant football on a day where the result was secondary. As the players shook hands at the final whistle the pride from the supporters and coaches was obvious for everyone to see.

19/04/12 – Bransty Rangers 2 Cockermouth Lightning 2

The previous two meetings with Bransty this season had resulted in Lightning conceding six goals on each occasion. With this in mind Lightning knew they were in for a tough game on a showery Thursday night in Whitehaven.

Lightning got the game started and were quickly into their stride. Jack H was first into the action making a couple of lovely runs down the left linking well with Daniel. Bransty’s pitch is small and tight but was in excellent condition so the football was a high standard with some crisp accurate passing from both sides.

At the midpoint of the first half Louis replaced Thomas G and Ben replaced Jack H. Both sides were creating a number of chances however Lightning could count themselves unlucky to go one down when a back pass from George took an unfortunate bobble to beat Aaron.

Lightning bounced back and were quickly on level terms when great link up play between Louis, Pierce and Daniel found Will in space to drill home a lovely left foot drive.

The half time whistle blew with the sides all square.

Bransty started the second half the stronger team and Aaron was called on to make a number of excellent saves. Player of the match Thomas G was back on as was Jack H and both were making an impact on the game. George was reliable as ever in the centre back role and put in some excellent headed clearances. Special mentions must go to Daniel and Rhys who ran tirelessly and made some great interceptions as well as setting up a number of attacks.

Ben and Louis came back off the bench for the last ten minutes hoping to see Lightning take the lead. Unfortunately it was Bransty that scored a second with a great cross/shot from the left that went in at the near post.

Lightning showed real character and didn’t let their heads go down as they went in search of an equaliser. Pierce was first to try his luck but unfortunately his long range effort was just over the bar. Aaron then launched an enormous goal kick which Louis flicked on beautifully into the path of Will who under great pressure managed to get his shot away but it was just wide of the post.

With time running out Ben launched a long throw into the box, a scramble followed but the strong Bransty defence held out. With only a minute on the clock Aaron hammered another huge goal kick forward, this time there was no touch and with the ball taking an awkward bounce it just sneaked into the net despite a great effort from the Bransty keeper. Without the aid of goal line technology it was one of the Bransty coaches who very sportingly awarded the goal.

The final whistle blew shortly after on a very pleasing performance against a strong Bransty side.

Goals: Will, Aaron

21/04/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 2 Bigrigg Bulls 0

On the penultimate weekend of the league season Lightning hosted Bigrigg Bulls who are without doubt the most improved team in the league.

Straight from the kick off Bigrigg put Lightning under pressure with some forceful attacking play. Mark, Aaron and Ethan in defence endured a torrid first half as Bigrigg launched attack after attack. George, Rhys and Jack H replaced them after ten minutes and were again straight under the cosh as Bigrigg continued to surge forward. Louis replaced Thomas G and found some joy down the left flank but a rock solid Bigrigg backline restricted the Lightning front four throughout the entire first half.

As the whistle blew for half time Bigrigg had hit the woodwork three times and Lightning had failed to get a shot on target. However the big plus for Lightning was that the score was still 0:0.

The second half started better for Lightning as they enjoyed more possession and started to find space. Thomas G hit top form, spraying some lovely passes for Will and Pierce to run on to. Daniel again worked tirelessly and put in some great tackles as well as carrying the ball well in midfield.

Midway into the second half the deadlock was finally broken as Pierce unleashed a cracking shot which took a slight deflection to wrong foot the excellent Bigrigg keeper. Lightning kept the pressure on and forced a number of corners and it was from that route that Lightning scored their second. Player of the Match Will delivered a beauty which fell to Aaron who took the chance well to make it 2:0.

Jack H was outstanding in defence and attack and Caleb showed what a quality keeper he is to prevent Bigrigg from scoring.

The final whistle blew and as the saying goes it was a game of two halves. On the day Bigrigg were excellent opponents but Lightning’s skill, grit and sheer determination ultimately saw them home.

27/04/12 – Bigrigg Bulls 1 Cockermouth Lightning 8

Back to back fixtures with Bigrigg Bulls saw Lightning away at last week’s opponents. On a lovely Friday evening the Bigrigg pitch was in good condition and after the previous game Lightning knew they were in for a very tough match.

Bigrigg started the brighter team and their dangerous attacking line were straight into the game passing the ball around with confidence. Lightning to their credit however knew that they couldn’t give Bigrigg any time on the ball and put in tackle after tackle with Caleb playing with confidence in goal.

After weathering the early pressure Lightning started to use their passing game to full effect. Jack H and Daniel were combining beautifully on the left as were Rhys and Aaron on the right to create some real pressure on the Bigrigg goal. The hard work was rewarded midway through the first half as the ball fell to player of the match Pierce who skipped past two defenders to plant a beauty in the top corner.

Thomas G replaced Daniel and was straight into the action with some lovely skill that found Pierce in space to repeat his earlier strike and make the half time score 2:0.

Lightning knew that this game was far from over and started the second half superbly. Daniel was back into the action as Rhys took a breather. George who was once again rock solid in defence headed a great clearance that was picked up by Will who found Aaron in space to lay the ball off to Pierce to bag his third.

More pressure from Lightning saw Jack H deliver a pinpoint throw in to Will who took full advantage beating two players before slotting the ball home. One of the most pleasing aspects of Lightning’s play in recent weeks is how much the full backs are now getting involved in the attacking third. They have shown real energy and determination in getting up and down the field.

Bigrigg weren’t done though and hit Lightning on the break with a great individual goal that gave the unlucky Caleb no chance. This spurred on Lightning as Rhys replaced the excellent Jack H. Corner after corner followed but Bigrigg held out with some great defending.

The ever adaptable Rhys now playing on the left linked well with Thomas G and the ball found Aaron in space in the box to finish well. More great passing saw Will thread a great ball in to Pierce who showed real composure to net his fourth.

Lightning weren’t done as Daniel showed his silky skills to beat three players before hitting a great shot against the post. The ball came out to Will who finished calmly.

With time running out Lightning continued to press forward and following more accurate passing Will found Thomas G who netted the goal his efforts deserved and rounded off a fantastic team effort by Lightning.

Goals: Pierce (4), Will (2), Aaron, Thomas G

28/04/12 – Cockermouth Lightning 3 Cockermouth Thunder 4

After 27 league games here it was the final match of the season and what a way to finish Lightning versus Thunder! Let’s not forget that all 25 players on both sides are teammates and great friends who have played and trained together for the past two years so the excitement was there to see on everyone’s faces.

Thunder were into their stride early with Oliver and Kyle linking well. Ben was in determined fashion however and made a number of strong early tackles. Mark was full of energy and was putting in some good touches. Ethan was always available and was playing with confidence. Despite this the first 10 minutes belonged to Thunder and they took a deserved lead through a lovely finish from Oliver.

Spurred on by going a goal down Lightning piled the pressure on the Thunder goal. Will had a great individual run beating the Thunder defence before unleashing a powerful shot that Jack D did well to save. Similar pressure followed and following wonderful skill from Daniel, Jack D made an excellent double save to deny Daniel and then Will.

The teams turned around with Thunder still one goal to the good. Lightning were now playing into a strong head wind. Jack H and Thomas G have built up a great understanding with each other through the season and were linking well down the left flank. Aaron was putting in tackle after tackle on the right while Pierce ran tirelessly in the midfield.

Thunder are a powerful side though and player of the match OIiver was again on hand to slot home his second of the game with another composed finish. Despite this Lightning continued to press forward but couldn’t find a way through the rock solid Thunder defence. Speaking of which, Aidan picked up the ball in midfield and unleashed a rocket of a shot which gave the Caleb no chance of stopping. 3:0 to Thunder.

Any other team might have folded but Lightning never give up and player of the match Will was once again in the right place at the right time to steer home the goal that their persistence deserved. Not to be undone though Thunder responded well and a great team move saw Kate finish with style to regain Thunder’s three goal advantage.

With time running out Lightning gritted their teeth and pressed forward again. This time it was Daniel who scored the goal his great all round performance deserved. Almost straight from the kick off Will stole the ball and found Pierce in space. For those of us who have seen Pierce in action this season we knew what was coming next as he fired a trademark rocket into the top corner. 4:3!

Deep into added time Thomas G was unmarked on the left. He looked up and instinctively shot at goal. All the supporters’ hearts were in their mouths as the ball looked goal bound only for it to just go over the bar. The final whistle blew on a classic encounter.

Every single player on both sides has done the club proud this season. The effort that they have put in has been phenomenal. It has been a season that we will all remember and the parents and coaches could not be more proud. Well done guys!
